June 2011: Summer picnic, election results, and Carroll Baker lecture report

Dear friends and fellow magicians,

Please remember to contact Don Hinton (513-248-0773 or dhinton@cinci.rr.com) with your reservations for our June 12, 2011 combined IBM/SAM picnic and War of the Wizards, to be held again at Lake Isabellain Loveland, Ohio.  Though we can still accept walk-in non-reserved attendees on the day of the event, we would appreciate a notice to Don Hinton so we can get a good idea of our food requirements.  Picnic begins at 2 pm, dinner at 5, followed by the magic show.

Our May 27th meeting started with our annual officer/board elections. With no new nominations from members in attendance, President Chuck Arkin accepted a nomination from the floor for the Secretary to cast a unanimous vote in favor the nominating committee’s slate of candidates for open positions.  The officers (1-year terms) and board of governors (3 year terms) for our 2011-2012 fiscal year are:

  • President – Don Hinton
  • Vice President – Chuck Arkin
  • Treasurer – Pat Hartzel
  • Secretary – Jeff Brown
  • Sergeant at Arms – Rick Gaffney
  • Board of Governors – Frank Johnston (3 year, newly elected), Mark Weichman and Cinde Wolf (each 2 years remaining), Helen Fehn and Josh Helton (each 1 year remaining)

Please feel free to contact any officer or board member with any ideas or suggestions you have regarding our Ring activities.

Carroll BakerThe highlight of our May 27th meeting was an outstanding lecture from professional magician Carroll Baker.  Carroll demonstrated and taught many effects that can be presented in a variety of venues, including restaurants, strolling magic in general, close-up and stage shows.  Carroll kept the audience engaged and entertained, beginning with a funny and interactive sponge rabbit routine. His “Estimated Thought”, “Cheater’s Lament”, “Lollipop Vanish”, “Forced Thought”, and “Coincidence” effects were outstanding!  Carroll’s method of using a retention vanish and coins across were outstanding!  Carroll clearly explained the techniques and presentation methods of each effect.  Carroll also provided fantastic insight into the business of magic, including strategies on promotion and booking more business. I highly recommend Carroll as a lecturer to other Rings and conventions, and any party seeking a world-class entertainer.

Our updated bylaws have been distributed and have been posted on our re-designed website.  Special thanks to our by-laws revision committee which consisted of your officers and board member Mark Weichman.  Be sure to take a few minutes to view our website; it has many new features including calendar, newsletter sign-up, and video links including amazing show excerpts featuring Dai Vernon and Jeff McBride.  Our webmaster, Jeff Brown, has done a terrific job with this site.  We seek to use this site to promote magic, so please contact Jeff if you either (i) have a web page that you would like us to link to, or (ii) are aware of upcoming magic events that you would like us to publish. Subject of course to webmaster review, we may publish other Rings and SAM clubs information as well!

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming June 12th picnic and our September lecture (more details to follow in the next Zig Zag publication).
